The Sentinel

The Sentinel

I wanted to share the work that me and my senior design team (Ian Hunter, Tyler Morris, Christopher Kiener) have been developing since the start of our senior year.

We have been working on a COVID-19 screening device capable of determining more accurately if the user might be infected with COVID-19 than conventional methods.

The goal

The goal of the Sentinel is to give a tool to employers, schools, and other institutions to come back to something resembling normality.

We are using three different sensors to determine possible infection:

  • Analyze temperature
  • Blood oxygen levels
  • Sense of smell to be able to give a more accurate result.

Like every project, we have had our ups and downs in the developing and manufacturing process. Last-minute changes and mistakes pushed teamwork to its limits, but the resilience and the same team working together made it possible to end up with a finished prototype.

How to use

  • It is very simple to use with an LCD screen that will hide you through the process.
  • First, you have to put your ID number and the test will start.
  • The Sentinel then will take your blood oxygen levels and prompt you to take your temperature as well. Lastly, the smell test is based on three different scented hand sanitizer dispensers. The screen will provide a nozzle number that will dispense the hand sanitizer and give you different options for you to choose.
  • Once you have identified the smell you will place your answer on the keypad.
  • Once the three tests are done, the Sentinel will determine if you are (high risk, medium risk, or low risk) for you to proceed with your routine.
